2018 is going to kick 2017’s butt! So many new books, TV shows and movies being released this year. Here’s what we’re excited about.
A Wrinkle in Time
Even though I bought the book years ago, I still haven’t read it. Those who know me know this is just typical. But I promise I’ll try really hard to finish it before the movie is released in March. Sure, I said the same thing about Tomorrow When the War Began two years ago and I still haven’t gotten to it…BUT the trailer is really good incentive. Oprah, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling all have fun hair and make up!
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
My my, how can I resist you? I’ll definitely be seeing this in July! I loved the first one (can’t believe it was 10 years ago!). Meryl Streep singing and dancing to ABBA on a Greek island in overalls? Not sure this sequel can top that. Especially considering Meryl’s character is maybe potentially dead?! Also they filmed in Croatia because Greece was too expensive. Why am I excited again? Oh yeah, the song Fernando is finally being showcased! I can hear the drums and they’re leading me to my local movie theatre. P.S. Can’t wait to see Colin Firth shake his British booty (Pierce Brosnan I could do without).
Handmaid’s Tale Season 2
If you haven’t seen season 1, look away. Look away and go and watch it. If you’re the kind of person impressed by awards, it just won the Golden Globe for Best Drama TV Series and Elisabeth Moss won Best Actress in a Drama TV Series. It’s fascinating and horrifying and oh so bingeable. The question on everybody’s mind now – where was the van taking Offred?? April can’t come fast enough.
Anne with an E Season 2
I’ve heard purists say that this adaptation of Anne of Green Gables is dark, hateful, unfaithful to the source material and altogether horrible. They’re entitled to their wrong opinions. I think the new edginess and inclusion of ‘real talk’ just makes it that much more interesting and relatable. Can’t wait to see what season 2 has in store and how the Cuthberts ultimately outwit, outplay and outlast those nasty thieves who beat up poor lovable Jerry!
Veep, Season 7
It was recently confirmed that Season 7 of HBO’s political comedy series, Veep, will be its last. Veep never fails to make me laugh out loud at Selina Meyer(Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and Co.’s antics and it will be sorely missed once it wraps up.
To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is one of my favourite contemporary YA books so I was beyond thrilled to find out it was being made into a movie. The book, and its two sequels (P.S. I Still Love You, and Always and Forever, Lara Jean), tell the story of Lara Jean Covey, a sixteen-year-old half-Korean, half-Caucasian girl who writes letters to her five past crushes with no intention of them ever reading the letters. Things become complicated when the letters are unexpectedly mailed out. One of the things I love about this series is how endearing Lara is, she is a total homebody who loves baking and scrap-booking and knitting. So she is totally relatable. I’m crossing my fingers that this lives up to my expectations.
Meet Cute: Some People Are Destined to Meet
I’m a sucker for cute romances so this anthology of original short stories featuring tales of “how they first met” from some of my favourite YA authors ticks all the boxes. It includes meet cutes that take place over iced tea, missed subway connections, library books, reality dating shows and more! This book has it all.
Toy Story Land at Walt Disney World
Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida will be introducing an entirely new section of the theme park dedicated to Toy Story. They have released the following information on their website:
“Toy Story Land, a whimsical place located in the larger-than-life setting of Andy’s backyard. This is your chance to discover what it’s like to be a toy with all-new attractions, quick-and-easy dining options… and so much more.
Amid a colorful landscape filled with giant building blocks and game board pieces, you’ll be immersed in an experience straight out of Andy’s vivid imagination…”
As if you needed another reason to visit Walt Disney World!
99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne
Things that happened as I prepared to add this to my post:
First, I was reminiscing about The Hating Game – easily my favourite read of 2017. If you haven’t read it, do so ASAP. Second, I looked up Sally Thorne’s upcoming title on Goodreads to double-check the release date which I swore was in February. Third, had a minor heart attack when the book was no longer there. Four, realised the book title was now confirmed (and different) but not due to be released until OCTOBER. Five, cried into my dinner.
Anyway, if this new book is anything like The Hating Game it’s a guaranteed winner. And I will survive until October by re-reading The Hating Game. Again. Get your updates here.
Terrace House: Opening New Doors
I became obsessed with this Netflix series late last year and I can’t wait for the new season. It’s currently airing in Japan and will have worldwide release in March 2018. If you aren’t sure if it’s for you, check out our 10 Reasons to Watch post. Then get watching so you’re all up-to-date for the next season.
Supergirl Season 3 – Karamel?!
Confession: I am a Karamel shipper. What the hell is Karamel? Why, only the greatest ship on tv – between Kara (aka Supergirl) and Mon-El aka sexy Prince of Daxam. And at the start of season three (spoiler alert!) he was finally reunited with Kara, only for her to find out he’s now married, breaking not only her heart, but the hearts of shippers across the globe. So now their relationship is set to “It’s complicated” and I MUST know if they’re going to end up back together. Also, that mid-season finale cliffhanger!!
Seriously. Am I all alone in this fandom?
Travelling to Chile
Yep, taking this moment to brag about my upcoming mid-year travels. I am off to Chile for a friend’s wedding and I am super excited. I’ve been studying my Spanish with renewed enthusiasm, and will use this as an excuse to rewatch Tierra de Reyes for the vocab. (lol, as if I need excuses to rewatch Tierra)
Anyway, if you have travel tips for Chile, please drop me a comment below!
Mary Poppins Returns
Is there a more iconic childhood character than Mary Poppins? I think not. I love that a new generation will be able to fall under her spell like we did all those years ago. It looks like we have to wait nearly all year for it to grace our screens. But with an all star cast including Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep and Colin Firth, I’m sure it will be practically perfect in every way.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
As a major Harry Potter fan, I’m super excited for anything that is part of the HP universe. But what makes this extra exciting is that it sounds as though this one will tie into the original books more than the first Fantastic Beasts movie. With Jude Law(!) playing a young Albus Dumbledore, it looks like we will learn more about the Grindelwald/Dumbledore story as that was alluded to in the Deathly Hallows. I can’t wait!
All Aussie Adventures
Yes, you did read that right. I’m excited for All Aussie Adventures and the return of Russell Coight. I cannot believe that this show is coming back! I used to love it when it was on all those years ago. If you haven’t seen the original episodes and this so called ‘survival and wildlife expert’ in action then get youtube-ing right away to get ready for the new eps!
There isn’t a lot of information released about this mini series yet, but apparently it is being released in 2018 – hopefully that means in Australia too! As a period drama junkie this is an automatic inclusion on my to-watch list, so I’ll be tuning in when it does air. It’s based on the novel by William Makepeace Thackeray which I have read, but cannot remember a thing about so looking forward to diving back into the world of Becky Sharp.
