There are many wonderful things about living in Melbourne. And one of them is the unseasonable weather we often experience. Which is great, because while the northern hemisphere starts gearing up for “the fall” and eating and drinking all things pumpkin spice, we have a small window of time where we too can enjoy. So on this rather cold-ish Saturday in October, we made the most of our last cool days by eating and drinking like autumn has suddenly reappeared. Wherever you are in the world, if you’re also a lover of the cooler weather, cinnamon, nutmeg and pumpkin-y goodness, read on.
1. Grab yourself a pumpkin spice latte
Since Starbucks finally launched the pumpkin spice latte here in Australia, we have become slightly obsessed. Ok, a lot obsessed. You can read all about our first tasting here. Unfortunately, Starbucks venues are few and far between, so don’t be afraid to get creative and try it at home like we did! While it definitely requires a lot more time and effort to make your own pumpkin spice syrup, the results are completely worth it! Get the recipe for the syrup here.
2. Decorate like you mean it
Go all out with autumnal colours – warm oranges, browns, even some green. I crocheted this autumnal table runner last year, and it was perfect for our table! Get the pattern here.
3. Bake something spicy
No, not make-your-eyes-water-spicy. Cinnamon-and-nutmeg spicy. If you’re going to gorge on pumpkin goodies all day, our only recommendation is to steer clear of too much sweetness to avoid feeling sick by the end of the day. We had:
- Pumpkin chocolate chip cookies (get the recipe here)
- Pumpkin almond butter cups (Vegan and gluten free. Get the recipe here – this was a crowd pleaser!)
- Pumpkin pie crumb bars (also vegan and very delicious, and from one of our favourite bloggers, Bakerita – recipe is here)
This was all “balanced” out with some sweet potato chips and chipotle quinoa chips. 🙂
4. Put your feet up and watch a “fall-specific-movie”
You have no idea how jealous we are that America gets amazingly cheesy channels like Hallmark that spit out holiday and season-themed movies. Thank goodness for Netflix for getting some of these to us! So, while you’re sipping your latte and trying to decide if you should, indeed, eat another pumpkin spice almond butter cup (you should!), we highly recommend tuning into something truly corny and romantic like October Kiss or Harvest Moon. Of course, if you’re in the US, you will have access to all the latest fall movies, of which we are supremely jealous.
5. Give your mani a pumpkin twist
Why not get in the spirit and spice up your mani while you’re at it? I love themed nails, but I went fairly subtle on this occasion, with OPI’s Bright Lights, Big Colour and My Favourite Ornament.
6. Carve a pumpkin
Ok this is technically a Halloween thing, but whatever. Having never carved a pumpkin before, ours turned out surprisingly well! Question to our seasoned Halloween celebrators: do people actually ever consume these sorts of pumpkins? Or are they grown purely for carving purposes?
7. Bring on the salt
And when you’re finally feeling ill from all the sugar you’ve consumed, might we suggest giving in to some salt cravings and ordering a couple of pizzas to enjoy as you continue your cheesy movie-watching? And water. Lots and lots of water.
Are you a pumpkin spice fan? How do you embrace all things pumpkin during the fall? We’d love to hear from you. Drop us a comment below!
