La Doña walks a fine line between gritty crime drama and soap opera (a crime opera?), which is perhaps why it is so addictive. One of the latest Telemundo additions to grace our Netflix screens, it’s been nominated for a load of Premios Tu Mundo Awards – including Favourite Series, Best Bad Boy, and Perfect Couple. But if you need further convincing, here are our ten reasons to tune in. *Warning* Mild spoilers ahead.
A couple of years ago I thought telenovelas were only something bored housewives and old ladies watched to pass the time. But now thanks to TV on demand and Netflix, I am a hardcore telenovela convert and devotee (and I’m not a housewife or “old”)! Some of you are probably thinking – Telenovelas? Aren’t they those foreign language soap operas with the comical melodrama, OTT bitch slaps and excessive shirtless men? Well, yes. Yes they are. But they’re also so much more than that. Like traditional English-speaking soap operas, telenovelas have their own set of traditional storylines and tropes that viewers look forward to. If you’re a novice, here are ten things to expect while watching a telenovela.
Telenovela? Check. Cowboys? Check. Mucho, mucho, mucho romance? Check, check, check. Tierra de Reyes is another Telemundo goodie that has landed on our Netflix watch-list, and this has easily become my favourite. Read ahead, to see why.
You may have caught our recent post reviewing the Spanish telenovelas currently on offer on Netflix Australia. Of those, La Casa de al Lado has quickly become one of our favourite shows to watch. We love to talk about it, we love to mock it, and we love to love it. Here are our reasons why we think you’ll love it too.
You may have noticed that Netflix have recently added a bunch of Spanish-language TV shows, telenovelas and movies – yes, that includes Netflix Australia. This was a sight for sore eyes, because we have been suffering major telenovela withdrawals since En Otra Piel finished on SBS. So we watched the first episode of each of Netflix Australia’s telenovela offerings, so you don’t have to. And here, we help you to decide what to watch next!
It’s the FINAL episode everyone! *sob* I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the readers of these recaps – and especially everyone who has left me comments. It’s been great reading them every week and sharing watching this truly addictive show with you all. Let it be known, we here at Cactus Pop have emailed SBS (several times) asking for a new telenovela to be put on. They have said there’s no plans at this stage but that they have had a lot of similar feedback and they are passing it all on. So fingers crossed. Anyway, let’s recap this final episode! It’s a tearjerker!
