I love historical dramas. Any time I see some sort of period costume I immediately am intrigued. What time period is it set? Where is it set? Is it a true story? Does it have a hunky love interest? Ok that last one isn’t very specific to the genre, but it’s still an important question.
There’s a mountain of historical dramas on Netflix Australia so I’ve put together a list of some of the ones I’ve been watching recently as well as some of the ones that are next on my to watch list.
1 season available
This one has only just been added to Netflix and I’m so excited that it was! Set during the reign of Queen Victoria, it charts the early days of her reign and her marriage to Albert. There is a second season out so fingers crossed that is added to Netflix soon. Beautifully filmed, it’s a little Downton Abbey-ish as we get to see some downstairs people too and follow their stories.
6 seasons available
Speaking of Downton Abbey, if you missed it the first time around, then you catch up on Netflix as all 6 seasons are ready for your viewing pleasure. Relive the highs and lows of the Crawley family and their staff in the turbulent years leading up to World War I and beyond. I love watching them navigate the new world that emerges from the war and find their place. The costumes in this show are absolutely incredible and are a reason to watch.
When Calls the Heart
3 seasons available
This Hallmark series is a little cheesy but oh so addictive! In it, we follow Elizabeth Thatcher, a young teacher from a wealthy family. Her dream is to move out west to the Canadian Frontier and teach. But let’s be honest it’s all about Mountie Jack, an officer of the Royal North West Mounted Police who is assigned to the sleepy little town to protect her. Here’s hoping season 4 is available on Netflix asap!
Call the Midwife
4 seasons available
This heart-warming show follows the lives of young midwives living and working in the East End of London in the 50s/60s. Even though there is poverty and heartbreak, babies keep on coming and it’s up to these young women to help and look after the newborns and the mothers. It’s actually based on memoirs of a young midwife so it’s entertaining and informative!
4 seasons available
I’ve only just started watching this Spanish TV series but I’m really enjoying it so far. It’s set during the 50s/60s in Madrid and it centres around a family owned fashion store – Velvet. Much of the story revolves around Alberto, son of the owner, and Ana, a seamstress who grew up working in the store. They are a little like star-crossed lovers, something always conspiring to keep them apart.
North and South
1 season (4 episodes) available
I can’t put together a list of historical dramas on Netflix and not include my favourite period drama of all time. If you are a fan of Pride and Prejudice, then you will love this adaptation of the novel by Elizabeth Gaskell. It’s all about the clash of cultures between the idyllic south and the harsh north. The positively dreamy Mr Thornton is the real highlight though.
other historical dramas on my ‘to watch’ list…
Anne with an E – Based on the beloved book ‘Anne of Green Gables’ and follows orphan Anne in her new life on Prince Edward Island.
Cable Girls – Another Spanish show, this one is set in the 1920’s and follows four women working as telephone operators.
The Paradise – Follows a young woman who starts working in a department store in 19th century London.
Keep an eye out for part 2 if you like your historical dramas to have a little bit more action!
