Over here at Cactus Pop we are trying out new, natural and green ways to live. And something we have recently tried is jojoba oil. Jojoba oil exists in many moisturisers on the market, so it makes total sense that it would be amazing for your skin when used on its own. Read on below to see the three different ways we have been using it and, most importantly, whether it worked.
Note: Sarah tried out the cleanser method, and has dry, sensitive skin. Sam tried it out as a makeup remover and moisturiser, and has combination skin. The results we had might vary depending on your skin type, and we always recommend doing a small test beforehand.
As a cleanser
As someone who suffers from sensitive, dry skin I find that a lot of cleansers can cause irritation and make my face feel tight and dry. So when I stumbled on the oil cleansing method (OCM) I was keen to give it a shot as it seemed like a gentle way to cleanse without using chemicals and astringents. I was a little sceptical at first. How could oil clean my skin? But I was pleasantly surprised with the results. The oil dissolves any dirt or makeup on my skin and leaves my skin looking and feeling clean. The premise behind it is that “like dissolves like”, so the oils that you put on your skin will dissolve the oil from makeup, sebum etc on your face. You just massage the oil into your face (some people place a warm – not hot! – face cloth on their face prior to massaging in the oil) and then gently remove the excess oil with soft dampened cloth. The best part I have found is that there is no irritation or “dry skin” feeling, just refreshed and hydrated skin!
As a makeup remover
Look it up on YouTube or a simple Google search, and you’ll find loads of recipes for homemade make up remover – and many of them contain jojoba oil. So far I have tried this recipe and I have loved it. It’s really easy – just mix equal parts water, witch hazel and oil, place in a jar, mix it up, and soak your cotton pads in there. Make sure your jar is airtight and you’re good to go.
I make it up in a smaller batch than in the recipe linked – half the quantities listed – because I found I can use less cotton pads and there’s a more even saturation of the mixture. It takes my makeup off really well, even mascara – and I use Benefit’s They’re Real mascara which is notoriously hard to get off. Plus, my skin feels super soft afterwards. I was wary of using this on my eyes, but I found as long as the cotton pad wasn’t too wet it was fine – and actually made my eyelashes feel great. That said, if you’re worried about your eyes, steer clear and use only on your face.
In case anyone was wondering, I used T.N. Dickinson’s Witch Hazel, which can be purchased at chemists and supermarkets. It does have alcohol in it, which worried me, but I haven’t found it to be drying at all. I would love to try an alcohol free formula, but haven’t been able to find one in Melbourne. As a moisturiser
This is by far my favourite way to use jojoba oil. I have given up my pricey night cream and now just use the oil. I simply use my fingers to massage the oil onto my face at night and that’s it. And you don’t need much – a little goes a long way. It doesn’t leave oily marks on my bed linen and my face feels incredibly smooth and plump.
I can honestly say I have never noticed such a big difference in my skin, than the difference I’ve seen and felt since using jojoba oil. My pores are less noticeable and cleaner – yes, my blackheads are going away. My skin feels super soft. And perhaps best of all, I find I don’t get as oily across my T-zone during the day. You would think oil plus oily skin would be a bad thing, but it’s actually balancing for oily/combination skin. Added bonus: any excess left on your finger tips can just be massaged in as a really hydrating cuticle treatment!
